Compression springs
The danger of buckling does exist with
compression springs, and is dependent on the
size, guide method and seat of the springs. If the
spring is employed in conjunction with a bush or
a mandrel it is impossible for it to buckle. In other
cases buckling mostly depends upon the design
of the seat. The buckling length (Lk), which is
given in the table, shows the length to which a
spring can be compressed without buckling, and
is applicable to spring ends with a seat coefficient
v=0,5 (EN 13906-1 part 9.14).
This is following case:
The value given in the column ''Lk'' is the length
as of which the risk of the spring buckling at the
seat-coefficient v=0,5. If the value in this column
is ''0.00'' the spring may be completely com-
pressed to ''Ln'', without any danger of buckling.

In many cases compression springs are prone to
''set'' themselves. This means that the original
free length of the spring (L0) can no longer be
reached once the spring has been compressed to
its minimum length (Ln), the spring has become
shorter.
This tendency can be prevented through a so-
called scragging procedure. This allows the
compression springs to return to the original free
length ''L0'', when they are in a relaxed position,
no matter what the application.
All springs which show this ''setting" tendency
because of their size are pre-set within the

The dimensional data for "Ln" have been
adapted to the current standard EN 13906-1.
The dimensions of the compression springs
have not been modified, which means the
compression springs can still be used for all
individual cases they have previously been
used for.
